When you think of innovative brands on social media, for-profit companies like Duolingo or Wendy’s might be the first to come to mind. But nonprofit organizations also have a place in the social sphere–and an important one, too!  For nonprofit organizations, leveraging social media effectively can amplify your impact, raise awareness, and engage supporters. Here are some essential tips to enhance nonprofits’ social media presence:

Social Media Tip #1: Craft Compelling Stories

Stories have the power to inspire action. Share impactful stories of individuals or communities positively affected by your nonprofit's work. Use visuals like photos and videos to make your stories more engaging and memorable.

Take this video from Austin Angels, for example:

By telling the story of a local corporate partner, their CEO effectively communicates the importance of community partners and the impact of their support.

Social Media Tip #2: Highlight Achievements and Milestones

Celebrate your nonprofit's achievements, milestones, and impact metrics. Create infographics or share success stories that demonstrate your initiatives' tangible outcomes.

Take this post by FAMD, for example–Sharing their impact in a way that is easily digestible and still effectively highlights their achievements:

Social Media Tip #3: Engage with Supporters

Social media is all about building relationships. Be sure to respond promptly to comments, messages, and mentions. You never know where a response might lead! Create content encouraging supporters to share their experiences and why they support your cause. Sharing these stories will help spread awareness and ultimately build your nonprofit’s credibility. Another great way to foster community engagement is to host live Q&A sessions or virtual events!

Speaking of virtual events, in 2020, Mariners Inn, a nonprofit based in Detroit, enlisted RANDOM to create and promote a virtual version of its annual concert benefit. With the help of RANDOM, Mariners Inn had over 3,000 live viewers and exceeded their donation goal. Read more about how we supported Mariners Inn with our digital expertise by viewing the case study

Social Media Tip #4: Utilize Hashtags Strategically

Hashtags are a long-standing tactic that helps your profile reach a broader audience. It’s important to use hashtags that are relevant to your cause, event, or post. The ideal number of hashtags can vary depending on what platform you are using–so be sure to do your research!

Social Media Tip #5: Create Educational Content

Educate your audience about the issues your nonprofit addresses. Share informative posts, tips, and resources related to your cause. Position your organization as a thought leader in your field by sharing insights and expertise.

Social Media Tip #6: Partner with Influencers and Supporters

Collaborate with influencers, ambassadors, or well-known supporters who are passionate about your cause. Their endorsement can amplify your message and reach new audiences. Consider even featuring them in your content or campaigns!

Now, we are well aware that not all nonprofits can get John Legend and Chrissy Teigen to make an appearance at their next event. But, collaborating with well-known supporters, even ones close to your community, is a great way to spread the word about your cause:

Social Media Tip #7: Share User Stories and Testimonials

Feature testimonials from beneficiaries, volunteers, or donors to showcase the real-world impact of your nonprofit's work. User-generated content adds authenticity and builds trust among your audience.

This post from Kat-Katha does a beautiful job of sharing one of their volunteers’ stories, including how her involvement with the organization has impacted her and those she’s worked with:

Social Media Tip #8: Utilize Nonprofit-Specific Tools

Maximize your efforts on social media by utilizing everything that’s offered to you. Many platforms incorporate a way for nonprofits to receive donations without their viewers even having to leave the app. Just take a look at how TikTok supports nonprofit fundraising efforts here.

Social Media Tip #9: Be Aware of Awareness Days

Watch for amplification opportunities like designated cause awareness and giving days. These days can range from specific to broad and normally incorporate a related hashtag. No matter the cause of your nonprofit, there is most likely a day for you!

Social Media Tip #10: Measure and Adapt

Track key metrics such as engagement rates, reach, donations, and volunteer sign-ups to gauge the effectiveness of your social media efforts. Use analytics tools to understand what content resonates most with your audience and adjust your strategy accordingly.

There are plenty of ways to view your metrics at no cost. Consider free tools such as Meta Business Suite (for Facebook and Instagram) and utilizing native analytics tools offered by other social media platforms.

By implementing these social media tips, nonprofits can effectively raise awareness, engage supporters, and drive meaningful action for their causes.
