Random Round-Up: February 2025 Social Media News and Updates

Let's dive into the latest social media updates and news from February!

The New TikTok Studio Update

Apple and Google have reinstated TikTok on U.S. mobile app stores, bringing an end to a nearly month-long standoff with the video platform following the implementation of a ban in January. Notably, TikTok has finally introduced post-scheduling within its TikTok Studio management tool. This offers a more streamlined approach to content management and analytics, all in one place (note: the TikTok and TikTok Studio apps were removed from the Apple and Google Play stores, but as of this writing have reappeared). While third-party tools have long offered scheduling capabilities, this built-in functionality enhances and even improves the convenience. It also simplifies the process. With the ability to edit and update scheduled posts already available, the addition of direct scheduling makes TikTok Studio an even more powerful tool for creators and brands for managing social media updates.

Poppi’s Pricey PR Move

With the recently wrapped Super Bowl comes a surge of social media attention, particularly focused on the highly anticipated commercials and how brands respond (with each 30-second ad spot costing around $8 million).

Influencer with Poppi Vending Machine

Influencer with Poppi Vending Machine

Poppi, a sparkling prebiotic soda brand, is facing backlash for its Super Bowl marketing strategy. The ad, entitled “Soda Thoughts”, starred influencers like Alix Earle, Jake Shane, and Rob Rausch. Even though the ad itself was great, the marketing campaign leading up to it now has faced some criticism.

Ahead of the event, the company gifted 32 influencers including Jake Shane, Rachel Sullivan, and Avery Woods each a $25,000 vending machine stocked with Poppi drinks, as an attempt to generate buzz. However, the campaign quickly sparked criticism over wastefulness and exclusivity. Instead of excitement, fans voiced frustration. They argued that the brand should prioritize accessibility over gifting expensive machines to already wealthy influencers and rethink their social media updates.

The controversy ignited a larger debate about influencer marketing tactics and budget allocation. In response, competitor Olipop seized the moment, sending free products to users who had criticized Poppi’s approach. This raises an important question: how will other brands adapt their influencer marketing strategies in light of this debate? We’re fizzing with excitement to see the social media updates on how brands will respond.

Meta Cuts Jobs to Fuel AI Talent

It looks like Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is making headlines once again. In February, Meta Platforms Inc. began notifying employees of mass layoffs, cutting thousands of jobs as the company cracks down on “low performers” and shifts its focus to AI dominance. Zuckerberg announced that Meta would reduce its workforce by 5%, specifically targeting those who “aren’t meeting expectations.” However, many employees were blindsided. Some, even those who had consistently exceeded expectations for years, expressed shock over their termination and discussed it on social media updates.

Layoff

As Meta moves full speed ahead in the AI race, the company plans to spend $60-$65 billion on research and technology this year. This is a MASSIVE jump from the $39 billion spent in 2024.

That’s a wrap! See you next month. 👋

Meet Kaija, Our New Digital Content Creator Intern

We're excited to welcome our digital content creator intern Kaija to the team, and what better way to do that than with a Q&A?

While searching for an internship, I came across a job opening at That Random Agency. As a master’s student, I’m always eager to learn new tools and techniques to expand my knowledge. What immediately caught my attention was the agency’s modern and unique branding—especially the fact that they wrote an AI book called Internet Safety Sammy! So cool! Everything about That Random Agency aligns perfectly with my interests and values. I can't wait to learn from the incredible team here!

Tell us three cool things about yourself.

  1. I've played sports my entire life and absolutely love the adrenaline rush that comes with team competition. Growing up, I played soccer, volleyball, and basketball, but in high school, I focused on soccer and volleyball. Eventually, I chose to play volleyball in college—partly because I was getting tired of all the running in soccer!
  2. I speak Latvian! Latvia is a small country in Europe, and my grandparents on my mom’s side immigrated to the United States during World War II. Growing up, I attended a Latvian summer camp, where I not only learned more about Latvia’s history and culture but also got to enjoy classic summer activities like canoeing, campfires, and games with other Latvians. Even though I don’t live in Latvia, I love being able to connect with other Latvians and keep the culture alive!
  3. I'm a huge Marvel fan! My dad and I love watching Marvel movies together, and it's our thing to recite quotes from them. If I had to choose a favorite character, it would definitely be Tony Stark—he's just so charismatic and witty! My dad and I even say "love you 3000" to each other, based on what Tony and his daughter say in Avengers: Endgame.

Favorite TV show?

Modern Family—no matter how many times I watch it, it still makes me laugh!

If money was no object, where would you go and what would you do?

I would instantly choose to visit Greece or Bora Bora! Ever since Mamma Mia came out, I’ve been obsessed and would love to explore all the stunning filming locations and take in the breathtaking views. Bora Bora also fascinates me—I always see videos of people staying in overwater bungalows, and that sounds like an absolute dream. If I had the chance, I’d probably try my hand at being a social media travel influencer, sharing content about the best restaurants, beaches, hotels, and shops I’d recommend!

What’s in your refrigerator right now?

Thankfully, I just went to the store! Trying to start 2025 off a bit healthier, so I picked up some overnight oats, zucchini, PICKLES, onions, avocados, strawberries, chicken, and ground beef for this week’s dinners. I also grabbed a Caesar salad kit, my oat milk and creamer for lattes, and, of course, some Sprite to make Shirley Temples!

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Great question! If I could have a superpower, I’d choose psychic abilities—similar to That’s So Raven. I’d love to catch glimpses of the future for a few seconds, just enough to know something is coming but not the full story—gotta keep life exciting!

What’s your favorite childhood memory?

Going to my lake house every summer with my family to spend as much time as we can in the sun and on the boat before going back to school!

Name one thing you wish you could do better.

One area I’d like to improve on is believing in myself and having confidence in my work. At times, I find myself comparing my progress to others, which can be discouraging. I want to focus more on trusting my own skills and growth rather than measuring myself against others.

Which three things would you take to a desert island?

  1. Tool Kit – I could at least attempt to build a hut or shelter with the tools.
  2. Lighter – There’s no way I’d be able to start a fire without a little help.
  3. Radio – If I’m stuck on a deserted island, I might as well have some music to keep me entertained.

What is the last book you read?

Happy Place by Emily Henry
